The lime stone building that houses The Old Hardware Store was built approximately four years after the incorporation of Halstead, Kansas, in 1878-79.  The old building has withstood vicious storms and several floods, but still remains steadfast and strong after 130 years.

A hardware store was established in the two-story building in 1885 and, it has remained a hardware store ever since.

When Margaret took over the building in 1998, she restored the oak cabinets, oiled the wood floors, reinstalled the ladder, and refurbished the tin ceiling. There are over 600 drawers and bins of vintage hardware, and Miss Margaret knows what is in each drawer!

Today, the focus is still hardware, but the store specializes in the old hardware that other hardware stores don’t carry.  There are over 600 drawers and bins of vintage hardware, and Miss Margaret knows what is in each drawer!

At this writing, the 1916 oak drawers contains over 400 patterns of antique furniture pulls, knobs of all kinds, handles, latches, hinges, locks, keys, hooks, etc. At this writing, the 1916 oak drawers contain over 400 patterns of antique furniture pulls, knobs of all kinds, handles, latches, hinges, locks, keys, hooks, etc.

The unique building is on the Harvey County historic site list and has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers. It is a step back in time where hardware is still sold by the piece.
